Tragedy struck at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks in Ohafia, Abia State, when Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Vitalis, a senior non-commissioned officer, died by suicide in front of the Forward Operation Base (FOB) gate.
CSM Vitalis, originally from Okpuala, Ngor-Okpuala in Imo State, was attached to the 144 Battalion’s FOB at Ngwa High School, Abayi, Osisioma.
The incident occurred without warning, and no suicide note was found, leaving the reasons behind his actions unclear.
Security sources stressed the need for a thorough investigation to avoid premature speculation.
Despite no prior reports of personal or disciplinary issues, CSM Vitalis had been missing for two weeks, with all attempts to reach him failing.
His sudden reappearance and suicide, particularly as he was set to retire in October, have left his colleagues and the military community with many unanswered questions.
Efforts to contact Army Public Relations Officer Lt. Prince Innocent Omale for a statement were unsuccessful.
The military has pledged a discreet investigation to clarify the circumstances of CSM Vitalis’s death, urging patience and sensitivity.
