The 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, visited Maiduguri, Borno State, on Tuesday to express solidarity with the victims of the recent flood disaster that devastated the area.
Obi, accompanied by key members of the Obidient Movement and Labour Party leadership, donated N50 million to the state's emergency relief fund to support those affected by the floods.
During his visit, Obi met with Governor Babagana Zulum and conveyed his condolences to the people of Borno.
He lamented the loss of lives and properties caused by the floods, noting that half of Maiduguri had been submerged and thousands displaced. A woman who tragically lost her newborn twins was among the flood victims Obi met at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Government College.
In a statement released by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi expressed his party's commitment to helping the people of Borno recover from the catastrophe.
The former Anambra State governor praised the efforts of the Borno State government and other stakeholders in addressing the crisis, emphasizing the need for continued support.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families, and we will do everything in our power to support them," Obi said. He also paid a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar El-Kanemi, and toured the spare parts market, where many traders lost their goods due to the floods.
The Labour Party delegation, which included Obi’s 2023 running mate, Dr. Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Chairman of the party’s caretaker committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, and the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, reassured the people of Borno that they would not be abandoned in their time of need.
Obi concluded by praying for peace and recovery for the state and its residents.
