The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a warning to the public against engaging in violent protests on Democracy Day, June 12.

In a statement by DSS spokesperson Dr. Peter Afunanya, the Service emphasized that it will not tolerate any violence or disruption of law and order.

The statement noted that the DSS is aware of plans by certain individuals and groups to organize physical protests on June 12, 2024.

These protests, intended to coincide with Democracy Day, have questionable motives. While citizens have the right to assemble and express themselves, these freedoms should not compromise public safety and national security.

The DSS cautioned against attempts by some non-state actors to incite public unrest through potentially violent demonstrations.

It highlighted that such actions contradict the Federal Government's peaceful approach to resolving issues, including the minimum wage. Citizens are urged to avoid unlawful behavior and instead use appropriate channels to express grievances.

The DSS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the nation against harmful actions by disruptive groups, maintaining collaboration with other security agencies to ensure peace and protect lives and property. Law-abiding citizens should continue their activities without fear.

The DSS also celebrated 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, calling for continued patriotism, unity, and dedication to building a better Nigeria. The DSS website, email, and phone lines remain available for public contact if needed.
