The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru for threatening to sack striking workers who are demanding the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage. The Governor claimed the state government does not owe workers and has started paying a ₦75,000 minimum wage. However, workers argue the minimum wage law, passed months ago, has not been adequately implemented.
In a statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero described the Governor’s threat as "irresponsible and unhelpful." He urged workers to continue the strike and called for national solidarity, including private sector affiliates, to join the action. The NLC emphasized that strike actions are a legal tool for addressing grievances and criticized the Governor for failing to engage in dialogue to resolve the issue.
The labor body has promised to escalate actions and issue further directives if the situation remains unresolved.
