In a recent online clash, Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu responded to Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti on X (formerly Twitter), accusing him of using her name for publicity.
The exchange began after Seun Kuti posted a video criticizing Yesufu’s advocacy, claiming she was overstating the challenges faced by African women.
Kuti argued that African women enjoy more freedom than women in many other regions globally.
Aisha Yesufu, known for her vocal stance on social and political issues, did not hold back in her response.
She posted: "Seun Kuti @RealSeunKuti is trying to get attention using my name, but his karaoke business isn’t successful like those in the music industry."
Yesufu continued by expressing frustration over Kuti's criticism of her accountability efforts, particularly her focus on government rather than the private sector.
She added, “Imagine being angry that I am holding government accountable and not private sector! I don’t blame him sha! If only his father had discipline over his loin, we would not be dealing with the consequence of that lack of discipline!”
Yesufu also referenced Kuti’s legacy, remarking that people attend his shows as a "caricature" of his late father, Fela Kuti, and that Seun has yet to establish his own identity in the music industry.
The exchange highlights a longstanding generational and ideological divide between some of Nigeria's most outspoken cultural figures.
