Malama Abdulkadir-Yanmama, a resident of Katsina State, returned N748,320 that was mistakenly transferred into her account.
The money, meant for the Federal Government’s Home Grown School Feeding Program, was erroneously sent to her instead of the vendors supplying meals to primary school pupils.
In spite of the tough economic conditions, Yanmama decided to report the error to the Social Investment Program Agency (SIPA) after identifying the sender and the intended purpose of the transfer.
Impressed by her honesty, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda awarded her N500,000, a commendation letter, and an invitation to participate in the next school feeding program.
During the presentation of the reward, SIPA Executive Director Dr. Mudassir Nasir commended Yanmama for her integrity, explaining that she had informed the agency after receiving the unexpected payment.
The Katsina Auditor General, Alhaji Anas Tukur-Abdulkadir, also praised her for her honesty, suggesting that such actions should be more widely recognized.
Yanmama stated that she knew the money didn’t belong to her and felt obligated to return it.
Her actions have sparked mixed reactions, with many praising her for her honesty, while others questioned her decision in light of widespread corruption in the country.
Governor Radda’s reward has been seen as a positive gesture to encourage ethical behavior in Nigeria.
