Legendary Congolese musician Koffi Olomide has addressed long-standing speculations about a rivalry with fellow music icon Awilo Longomba, emphasizing that their relationship was never adversarial.
In a recent statement, Olomide praised their mutual efforts in elevating Congolese and Francophone music on the global stage.
"Awilo was never my rival," Olomide clarified. "We were just two Congo brothers destined to put Congo on the musical world map… and we won!"
Drawing comparisons to the friendly competition between Nigerian superstars Wizkid and Davido, Olomide explained how both he and Awilo dominated their era with distinct styles.
"Awilo had the vibe of the club banger, while I took charge of the romantic African Frenchman style. Together, we changed the narrative for Francophone musicians in Africa, who had long been berated," he said.
Expressing gratitude to fans across the continent, particularly in Nigeria, Olomide thanked Africa for recognizing their contributions to music.
He also encouraged younger Francophone artists to draw inspiration from their journey.
"One love," he concluded, cementing his message of unity and mutual respect.
Olomide’s statement celebrates a legacy of collaboration over competition, underlining the shared success of Congolese music on the world stage.
