Nigerians were plunged into darkness on Monday, October 14, 2024, following another collapse of the national electricity grid.
The grid reportedly went down at around 6:18 PM, leading to widespread power outages across the country.
Checks revealed that power generation dropped from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 PM to 3.56GW by 6 PM, before falling to 0.00GW by 7 PM.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the incident in a statement, explaining that the grid collapse occurred at 6:48 PM, leaving several states without power. These include Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo.
In a statement signed by Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications, the EEDC said, “Due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers.”
The company added that it was awaiting further information from the National Control Centre in Osogbo on efforts to restore the grid.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company informed customers of the outage, stating, “The power outage is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 PM.
We are working with stakeholders to restore power as soon as possible.”
This latest collapse adds to the series of grid failures the country has experienced in recent times, raising concerns over the stability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
