Doyin Okupe, a former presidential aide, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu's ongoing trip to the United Kingdom, stating that it will provide him with an opportunity to reflect on his administration’s policies.
According to Okupe, the president’s retreat abroad will enable him to reassess his governance approach and make necessary adjustments for the benefit of Nigerians.
On October 2, the presidency announced Tinubu’s departure from Abuja to the UK for a two-week vacation, part of his annual leave. The presidency explained that Tinubu would use this period as a working vacation to reflect on his administration’s economic reforms before returning to the country after the break.
While some Nigerians have criticized the timing of Tinubu’s leave, given the prevailing economic challenges, Okupe defended the decision.
In an interview with popular Nigerian print media in Lagos, Okupe argued that the criticism stemmed from a lack of understanding of the situation.
He emphasized that the president required a calm and undisturbed environment to reflect and make strategic decisions without the distractions and pressures of political associates.
“I have read many uninformed criticisms of the president’s holiday trip abroad,” Okupe said. "From my understanding of how leaders operate during crises, I believe President Tinubu’s retreat will allow him to evaluate the past 17 months and map out a clearer direction for his administration. This will also help him reorganize his cabinet and make more effective decisions for the country."
Okupe further expressed optimism that Tinubu’s return would bring relief to Nigerians, noting that the time spent in the UK would enable him to implement changes that would lead to a brighter future for the country.
