In a recent statement, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, clarified that the current administration is actively working to rectify what he described as a significant oversight by former President Olusegun Obasanjo regarding Nigeria’s energy sector.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s "Politics Today," Onanuga emphasized that President Tinubu has never claimed the title of Minister of Petroleum, a role Obasanjo acknowledged he mishandled during his presidency.
Onanuga explained that under President Tinubu, the Petroleum Ministry operates with two ministers, each with distinct responsibilities.
He highlighted that one minister is specifically focused on gas, which he stated is a critical area that has been historically overlooked.
"Nigeria is more of a gas country than an oil country," Onanuga asserted, noting that the current government is prioritizing gas exploration and utilization.
He referenced Obasanjo’s recent admission of his past mistakes in this regard, indicating that Tinubu’s administration aims to shift the focus towards gas to bolster the nation's energy strategy.
"The President supervises all his ministers; he’s in charge of everything," Onanuga concluded, reinforcing the administration's commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s gas sector and ensuring a comprehensive approach to energy management.
