The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has hinted at a potential reduction in electricity costs for Nigerians in the coming months, as the federal government intensifies efforts to enhance power generation and distribution nationwide.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by Mr. Tosin Adeyanju, Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, on Thursday, October 5, Adelabu addressed concerns surrounding the rising electricity tariffs.
He assured Nigerians that electricity remains a more affordable option compared to the costs of running petrol or diesel generators, especially given the recent surge in fuel prices.
RantHQ Blog reports that despite complaints from citizens over this year’s tariff increases—especially for Band A customers who now pay N209.5 per kilowatt-hour—Adelabu emphasized that electricity costs in Nigeria are still lower than in neighboring countries like Togo, Mali, and Niger Republic.
However, he acknowledged that due to low income levels, many Nigerians struggle with the perceived high cost of electricity.
The minister’s statement comes amid growing frustration among Nigerians, who have been vocal about the increased tariffs and their economic burden.
Nonetheless, Adelabu remained optimistic, stating, “Nigerians can be assured of a reduction in the cost of electricity, with the current effort to step up generation and distribution of power in the country.”
