The local government elections in Kano State have begun without the presence of federal security forces, including the police, which is quite unusual for elections in Nigeria. Instead, security is being managed by the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA) and local vigilante groups. This decision follows a series of legal disputes, with a Federal High Court initially attempting to halt the elections due to concerns about the legitimacy of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC). However, a state high court later permitted the election to proceed across Kano's 44 local government areas. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the NNPP has expressed confidence in his party's support and potential success in the elections.
