Senator Ali Ndume has raised concerns over the speed with which President Bola Tinubu and some lawmakers are pushing the tax reform bills through the legislative process. Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Ndume suggested that the haste appears suspicious, especially given the controversy surrounding the bills and opposition from the National Economic Council (NEC).
The NEC, composed of state governors and chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, had earlier advised the Presidency to withdraw the bills for further consultations. However, President Tinubu opted to proceed with the legislative process, which has drawn criticism from figures like Ndume. He argued that the government should heed the NEC's advice, engage in broader consultations, and reintroduce the bills later if necessary.
Ndume's opposition reflects a growing sentiment among some lawmakers and Nigerians that the government should prioritize public understanding and acceptance of such reforms, especially during a period of economic hardship. This debate highlights the tension between the Presidency's push for fiscal reforms and concerns about public and institutional support.
