For the first time since Lagos State University's (LASU) establishment in 1984, a student has graduated with a First Class Honours degree in History and International Studies.
Temitope Ayeobasan, a 21-year-old, achieved this remarkable feat, with her results officially approved by the university’s Senate on Friday.
This milestone was disclosed by the Head of the Department of History and International Studies, Professor Adeyeri Olusegun, who praised Ayeobasan for her dedication and academic excellence.
He stated, “Ayeobasan Temitope has shown resilience from her 100 level until now. She deserves it. This is the first of its kind since this school was established in 1984.”
Reflecting on her academic journey, Ayeobasan shared that she initially planned to study law but found her passion in history after starting her program. "I actually never wanted to study history," she said.
"I had to settle for it temporarily while waiting for a transfer to law. But along the line, I fell in love with it and decided to stay."
Ayeobasan emphasized the importance of passion and commitment to achieving her First Class. “I adhered to my mantra: ‘Whatever’s worth doing at all is worth doing well,’ so I put my all into it,” she explained.
Despite the challenges of multiple exams on the same day and long hours of classes, she developed strategies like early preparation and surrounding herself with supportive friends, which helped her succeed.
Prof. Adeyeri hinted that the department would be keen to retain her, although the decision would ultimately rest with Ayeobasan. “Wherever she goes, she will need a mentor to help her advance,” he added.
Ayeobasan’s achievement marks a significant moment in LASU's history, serving as inspiration for future students of the university’s History and International Studies department.
