Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, recently urged the UN Women to join the fight against Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rate, emphasizing the need for urgent action in local communities. The call came during a town hall meeting organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with UN Women, themed Women’s Political Participation and Representation.
During the event, Senator Akpoti Uduaghan highlighted the importance of women’s roles in leadership, sharing her own experiences as a female legislator in Nigeria. She noted that women often face skepticism in leadership roles, making collective support from international organizations like the UN crucial to achieving meaningful change, especially in areas as critical as maternal health.
During the last town hall meeting, you shared your concerns, and we are here to address them, particularly to support your enterprises. As part of our one year celebration in office, I’ve been able to secure significant entrepreneurship support for you, she shared, emphasizing her dedication to championing women’s causes and local development.
Reflecting on her first year in office, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan shared her accomplishments across infrastructure, education, agriculture, and security. Projects include rehabilitating police stations, providing clean water systems, and renovating primary healthcare centers. Her educational efforts also stand out, with initiatives like distributing digital learning devices to public schools and equipping farmers with fertilizers and training programs to boost productivity.
Looking ahead, the senator announced plans to establish a Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Centre and a Mechatronic Centre in Kogi, designed to drive technological advancement in the region and inspire youth in STEM fields.
NILDS representative Prof. Shola Omotosho commended Senator Akpoti Uduaghan’s accomplishments, describing her legacy projects as a testament to the impact empowered women can make in public office. From her record of performance so far, we are convinced that when we empower women of integrity and intellect, they will use that power responsibly and effectively for the benefit of the people, Omotosho remarked.
With her call for UN support in tackling maternal health issues and her ongoing commitment to community driven projects, Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan is setting an example of effective, people-centered leadership. Her efforts are not only transforming her community but also paving the way for more women to take on leadership roles in Nigeria.
