Lagos State Governor, Babajide SanwoOlu, has emphasized the need for his administration to embrace technology and data-driven tools to enhance project management in the state. Speaking at a one day workshop organized by the Project Implementation and Monitoring Unit (PIMU) in collaboration with the Project Management Institute (PMI) USA, the governor urged his cabinet members to remain ahead of the curve by integrating digital tools into their daily operations.
Represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo Olu pointed out that technology now plays a crucial role in tracking projects in real time, measuring impact, and facilitating data informed decision making. He emphasized that the success of Lagos State's vision largely depends on the precision and commitment with which its projects are executed.
Sanwo Olu noted that his administration had set ambitious goals across various sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and technology. Achieving these targets, he said, requires not just passion but also a disciplined approach to project management.
Project management is not just a technical formality but the backbone of effective governance,Sanwo Olu stated, adding that delivering projects on time and within budget strengthens the government’s credibility and reinforces public trust. The governor also highlighted the importance of innovation, accountability, and the need for cabinet members to lead by example, setting high standards for their teams to meet the administration’s goals.
During the workshop, Olusegun Sanwo Olu, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Project Implementation and Monitoring, stressed the importance of adopting artificial intelligence (AI) to improve turnaround times and enhance decision making processes. He also called for better synergy between government agencies, particularly in areas of regulatory compliance and project monitoring, to ensure a unified approach to governance.
George Asamani, Managing Director of PMI Sub Saharan Africa, echoed these sentiments, noting that while Africa has great leaders and strategies, the continent needs to improve its project execution capabilities to fully realize its potential. He affirmed that Lagos, by embracing advanced project management strategies, is on the right path to creating meaningful and lasting impacts on the lives of its citizens.
As Lagos continues its journey toward becoming a megacity, the governor’s call to action underscores the importance of leveraging technology to ensure that public projects are efficient, transparent, and beneficial to the people of Lagos. This workshop marks a critical step in positioning the state as a model of innovation and excellence in governance.
