It appears there is a legal dispute within the Action People's Party (APP) in Rivers State over the party's leadership, sparked by a disagreement regarding the authenticity of the party’s chairmanship. The plaintiffs, represented by counsel Excel Omeghara, claim that they are the legitimate leaders of APP, having been elected through a congress supervised by INEC in 2022. They argue that despite the resignation of the former chairman, Kenneth Atata, the remaining executive committee (Exco) followed the party’s constitution by appointing Hart Badom as the new chairman.
The plaintiffs are contesting the leadership of Sunny Wokekoro, who they allege is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and was never part of APP. They are challenging his appointment as chairman of APP in Rivers State and seeking clarification from the court on the validity of the current leadership. The plaintiffs maintain that Wokekoro’s appointment violates the APP constitution since he was not a member of the party before assuming the leadership position.
This case is now before the court, where the plaintiffs hope to get a legal determination regarding the rightful leadership of the APP in Rivers State.
