Protest Erupts Over Ongoing Demolition Near Circular Road in Oyo State
Earlier today, the usually peaceful surroundings of the Oyo State Secretariat witnessed an outpouring of anger and frustration as a large group of protesters gathered to make their voices heard. The protest was in response to the ongoing demolition of structures near the newly flagged-off Circular Road project by Governor Seyi Makinde.
Residents, business owners, and other concerned citizens came out in significant numbers to decry the demolition, which they say has disrupted their lives and livelihoods. The protesters, carrying placards and chanting slogans, marched to the Secretariat to demand immediate action from the state government. Their frustration stems from the alleged lack of adequate notice before the demolition began, coupled with concerns that their compensation is either insufficient or yet to be addressed.
One of the protesters, a business owner whose shop was marked for demolition, expressed his frustration,We understand that development is important, but the government must consider the lives and businesses affected. We were not given enough time to relocate, and the compensation promised is not enough to cover our losses.
The Circular Road project, which is being spearheaded by Governor Seyi Makinde, is aimed at improving transportation infrastructure in Oyo State, easing traffic congestion, and fostering economic growth. However, this progress comes at a cost, as several homes and businesses along the route are being demolished to make way for the road.
The state government has defended the demolition, stating that it is necessary for the broader development of the state. They maintain that affected residents were given notice and that compensation will be provided to those whose properties fall within the demolition zone. However, for those on the receiving end, the sense of loss and disruption remains a significant issue.
As the protest continues, the tension between the state’s drive for development and the need to protect the rights of citizens is growing. Many are watching to see how the government will respond to the cries of the people, balancing progress with fairness.
It remains to be seen whether the protesters' demands will lead to a halt or reconsideration of the demolition, but one thing is certain—today's protest has drawn attention to the human impact of Oyo State’s ambitious infrastructure plans.
