Nigeria’s power sector has long been a point of concern, but recent developments signal a step in the right direction. According to Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, more than 40% of Nigerians now enjoy 20 hours of power supply daily. This significant improvement, announced in a statement by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), marks a milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to address the country’s electricity challenges.
Minister Adelabu attributed this achievement to the revolutionary measures taken by the Ministry of Power, supported by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. As part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hopeagenda, stable and consistent power supply is seen as essential for driving Nigeria’s economic growth and industrial development. Adelabu praised Tinubu’s commitment to the power sector, stating that the President's advocacy has been critical in the progress made so far.
One of the key achievements has been the generation of more than 5,500 megawatts of power in the past year, with further improvements expected by the end of 2024. For a country that has historically struggled with unreliable electricity, this is a notable leap.
Minister Adelabu emphasized that reliable and affordable electricity is crucial for Nigeria’s economic advancement. Power is the backbone of modern economies, fueling industries, businesses, institutions, and households. In his remarks, Adelabu noted, This is the only way to achieve requisite economic growth and industrial development, as none of these sectors can function without it.
The government's vision is clear: provide stable electricity to households, businesses, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and industries. A consistent power supply will allow these sectors to expand their capacity, improve infrastructure, and ultimately create more jobs for Nigerians.
The Ministry of Power is collaborating with 27 power-generating companies and 11 Electricity Distribution Companies to push this initiative forward. The goal is not only to increase power generation but to ensure that electricity reaches all corners of the country.
With President Tinubu’s continued support, the ministry remains committed to transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape. As the government pushes towards further improvements in the power sector, Nigerians are beginning to experience the benefits of these efforts, signaling hope for even better days ahead.
As Nigeria strives for economic growth and industrial development, a stable power supply remains at the core of these ambitions. With more than 40% of Nigerians now enjoying 20 hours of electricity daily, there is renewed optimism that the country is on the path to a brighter, more prosperous future.
The strides made in the power sector under President Tinubu’s administration show a clear commitment to addressing one of Nigeria’s most critical challenges. As the year progresses, the government’s efforts to expand electricity access and reliability will be key to unlocking the nation’s full potential.
