The local government election in Rivers State is continuing as scheduled, despite calls from stakeholders within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Governor Siminalayi Fubara to halt the process. The election materials, both sensitive and non-sensitive, have already been distributed to the Registration and Accreditation Centers (RACs) in various areas, including the Government Technical College in Ahoada East.
Governor Fubara, determined to move forward with the election, has voiced concerns that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is attempting to sabotage the process in favor of an "Abuja-based politician." The election is notable for the absence of police supervision, as the Rivers State Police Command withdrew from overseeing the proceedings.
Despite these tensions, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has reassured residents that the election will proceed, urging them to participate and exercise their voting rights in compliance with the Electoral Act. The streets have taken on the characteristic calm of an election day.
