Ahead of the Ondo State governorship election, 18 political parties signed a peace accord, committing to a violence-free process and to accept election results if they are deemed fair. The National Peace Committee, led by General Abdulsalam Abubakar, facilitated the accord, emphasizing democratic values and rejecting vote trading.
INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu expressed satisfaction with the peaceful climate so far and pledged logistical improvements for election day. Security arrangements have also been strengthened, with over 36,000 police officers and additional personnel from other agencies, totaling 43,157 security personnel, deployed across all local government areas.
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa praised the peace initiative, promising his administration’s commitment to the accord and urging others to do the same. This accord represents an essential effort to reduce electoral violence and promote a stable democratic process in Nigeria.
