Deji Adeyanju, a human rights activist, recently commented on the ongoing merger discussions among opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso. Adeyanju expressed doubts that even a unified opposition can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. He pointed out that the opposition missed a key opportunity in 2023, where disunity among candidates like Obi and Atiku allowed Tinubu to secure victory. According to him, the chances of defeating Tinubu are slim as long as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is seen to be aligned with the ruling party.
Adeyanju also criticized the idea of a merger, stating that the opposition’s past inability to cooperate cost them the 2023 election, despite a weak performance by the outgoing president at the time. He sarcastically suggested that opposition figures should continue on their divided paths, implying that a united front is unlikely to succeed against Tinubu’s political influence.
