In a remarkable achievement, the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has ranked Oyo State as the most employment friendly state in Southern Nigeria. According to the latest employment statistics released for 2024, Oyo State recorded an unemployment rate of just 2.0%, positioning it as the top state in employment creation, ahead of 31 other states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which reported a 14.1% unemployment rate.
The announcement was made public by Oyo State's Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade. He emphasized that the NBS ranking reflects the state’s consistent efforts to improve employment opportunities, driven by Governor Seyi Makinde's administration.
Oyelade noted that the significant decline in Oyo’s unemployment rate is no surprise, as the state government has implemented numerous employment initiatives across various sectors. The state's employment efforts have been at a high pitch, with thousands of new jobs created in both education and health.
One of the key factors contributing to Oyo’s impressive employment record is the government's focus on the education sector. Recently, the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) employed 7,000 new staff. Furthermore, the state's Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) announced the recruitment of 7,500 teachers and 3,000 non teaching staff. This adds to the 5,000 teachers employed during Governor Makinde’s first term.
Oyo State’s health sector has also witnessed significant growth in employment. The state government recently concluded the recruitment of 375 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, specialist consultants, and various other medical personnel. This move is expected to bolster healthcare delivery across the state.
In addition to the education and health sectors, the Oyo State Civil Service Commission is currently undergoing a recruitment process for 791 new staff members. Governor Makinde's administration has also reinstated, pardoned, and promoted 1,800 workers, further demonstrating its commitment to improving the welfare of public servants.
Governor Makinde’s approach to governance in his second term has been focused on surpassing his achievements from his first four years in office. His administration's dedication to job creation, infrastructure development, and worker welfare has earned Oyo State a leadership position in employment creation, not just in Southern Nigeria, but nationwide.
This recognition from the NBS is a testament to the state government's consistent and strategic efforts to combat unemployment and foster economic growth. As the employment drive continues, Oyo State is setting a standard for other states in Nigeria to follow, reinforcing its position as a leading state in job creation and development.
