In a proactive move to address escalating security concerns, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called for a State Security Council meeting next week. This gathering is set to address recent incidents, particularly a public clash between police officers and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officials, which has drawn widespread attention.
According to a statement by Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the upcoming meeting will include briefings from top officials, security agencies, and will be led by Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi, who initially intervened to prevent the situation from worsening. The meeting aims to ensure inter agency collaboration while assessing internal protocols, discipline, and security operations in Osun State.
Governor Adeleke expressed surprise at the confrontation between two essential arms of the state's security system. Emphasizing the need for discipline and adherence to operational codes, he noted that incidents involving both service to service and police civilian conflicts have increased, raising concerns over public safety and the state's peaceful reputation.
Governor Adeleke urged service commanders to take immediate action to uphold professionalism and discipline among personnel, both in their conduct with civilians and in inter agency interactions. He highlighted that Osun State’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states must be preserved, cautioning security agencies against heavy-handed law enforcement practices.
I urge our commanders to uphold discipline and operational rules among their personnel. Incidents of rogue operations and civilian harassment are on the rise, and we have now added service to service confrontations to this list. We must work to restore normalcy, Governor Adeleke stated.
In a bid to prevent future conflicts and maintain public trust, the Governor praised the work of Osun’s Service Commanders while stressing the importance of strong partnerships among security agencies. The meeting will prioritize solutions to foster better collaboration and prevent the recurrence of similar clashes.
As the state works to resolve these pressing issues, Governor Adeleke’s commitment to ensuring peace and security stands as a reminder of Osun's dedication to the welfare of its citizens and the professionalism of its law enforcement agencies.
Osun State residents now look forward to the outcomes of the upcoming meeting, hopeful that it will set a foundation for reinforced unity among security agencies and sustained peace across the state.
