The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has achieved a historic milestone with the appointment of Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Olanike Nafisat Balogun, as its first female pilot.
This landmark accomplishment is a significant moment in the history of the service's aviation unit, celebrating the rise of women in leadership roles.
Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS National Public Relations Officer, praised Balogun’s remarkable journey. Born in Kaduna and hailing from Odo-Otin Local Government Area in Osun State, Balogun began her career in 2002 as a customs assistant. Her steady progression showcases her resilience and commitment.
Starting in the air wing unit as a cabin crew member, Balogun made the bold decision to pursue her dream of becoming a pilot, overcoming various challenges along the way. She turned down lucrative opportunities in the private sector
but deeply rewarding.
“It wasn’t an easy path, but my focus was on serving the public and realizing my dream of becoming a pilot,” Balogun stated.
Her qualifications are a testament to her dedication and hard work. She holds an advanced diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a pilot certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, which was sponsored by the NCS.
Balogun’s trailblazing achievement is not just a personal milestone but a source of inspiration for women within and beyond the customs service. Reflecting on her success, she emphasized the importance of determination and resilience.
“Being the first female pilot in the NCS Airwing reflects my dedication to advancing both my dreams and the operational capabilities of the NCS,” she said. She encouraged young Nigerians, particularly women, to pursue their aspirations with unwavering resolve.
Balogun’s historic appointment underscores the growing inclusivity in the Nigeria Customs Service and its commitment to fostering talent and excellence.
