The organisers of the #FearlessOctober1 protest have confirmed that they will proceed with their demonstration on Nigeria’s Independence Day, despite attempts by security forces to discourage them. The protest is being organized in response to the hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation of the naira. The protesters, led by figures such as Omoyele Sowore, Juwon Sanyaolu, and Damilare Adenola, have written to the Inspector General of Police requesting security for the demonstrations, which are planned to take place at key locations, including Eagle Square in Abuja and Ikeja Under Bridge in Lagos.
The organisers emphasized that the protests will be peaceful and reiterated that protesting is a constitutional right. They are calling for the reversal of the fuel subsidy removal, constitutional amendments, and the release of previously detained protesters. Despite police warnings and the deployment of security personnel, the protest leaders expressed their determination, with several civil society groups pledging participation.
