In a significant move to improve the welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, the Federal Government has approved a 133% increase in their monthly allowance. Starting from July 2024, corps members will now receive ₦77,000, a substantial raise from the current ₦33,000.This development follows the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, aimed at enhancing the standard of living for Nigerian workers, including NYSC members. The approval was officially communicated by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, in a letter dated September 25, 2024. The letter, signed by the Commission's Chairman, Ekpo Nta, confirmed the government’s commitment to the new wage structure.The announcement comes after continuous advocacy by the NYSC leadership. Brigadier General YD Ahmed, Director-General of the NYSC, had earlier visited the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission to push for better compensation for corps members, recognizing their pivotal role in national service.Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, confirmed the approval in a statement released Wednesday night. She expressed the NYSC’s gratitude to the Federal Government for the raise, emphasizing that the enhanced allowance will not only bring financial relief but also motivate corps members to contribute more to national development.According to Embu, “The Federal Government has approved the increase of Corps Members’ monthly allowance to Seventy-Seven Thousand Naira (N77,000) with effect from July 2024. This is in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.”She added that this decision is expected to boost morale and encourage corps members to work harder in their service year. The raise marks a historic step in recognizing the importance of NYSC members in nation-building and providing them with a more sustainable financial cushion.
