The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting thunderstorms and rain across various parts of Nigeria from Wednesday to Friday. This update provides a comprehensive overview of expected weather patterns, urging residents to take necessary precautions, especially in flood-prone areas.
According to NiMet, thunderstorms are expected over several northern states, including Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto in the morning hours. As the day progresses, these weather conditions will spread to Gombe, Sokoto, Bauchi, Kaduna, and other northern states.
The North Central region will experience light to moderate rainfall over Plateau and Nasarawa states in the morning, with more rain expected in the afternoon across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa.
In the southern part of the country, light rains are expected in Akwa Ibom and Cross River during the morning, with rainfall extending to Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa states later in the day.
On Thursday, thunderstorms will continue across the northern states, particularly in Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, and Borno in the morning. Later in the day, these storms are expected to hit Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Bauchi, and other regions.
The North Central region will see more light to moderate rainfall during the morning in FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, and Plateau, with increased activity later in the day. Cloudy weather will dominate southern Nigeria, with expected rainfalls in Edo, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Osun, Abia, Enugu, Cross River, and Rivers.
Friday’s forecast shows thunderstorms continuing in Sokoto, Kebbi, Borno, and Yobe in the morning, moving towards Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, and Kaduna by the afternoon.
North Central states, including FCT, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau, will experience cloudy conditions in the morning, followed by thunderstorms later in the day. Meanwhile, parts of Southern Nigeria, particularly Osun, Oyo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states, are expected to receive rains in the afternoon and evening hours.
NiMet has warned residents to avoid flood-prone areas due to the potential for urban flooding, especially in cities that may experience heavy downpours. Strong winds are expected to accompany the thunderstorms, posing additional hazards. The agency urged the public and airline operators to stay updated with weather forecasts to ensure safety.
