A middle 24-year-old woman named Blessing has lured her 3-year-old brother from home to sell him off to human traffickers. Blessing owned up to her crime, claiming that hardship compelled her to sell her three-year brother, Friday Oknokwo, for 410,000 in Adamawa State.
She deceived her mother, Hauwa Lawan, by pretending to enrol her brother in a school in Mubi, 40 kilometres away. Instead, she sold him to human trafficker Efunaya Nabufe, who took him to Enugu State.
Blessing used the proceeds to buy a grinding machine and gave her boyfriend N200,000 for their traditional wedding expenses. Hauwa Lawan expressed disbelief that her daughter could sell her sibling to a stranger.
She recounted how Blessing lied about enrolling her brother in school and how she hadn’t heard from him for a year. The truth emerged when Blessing’s father discovered the child’s whereabouts during her marriage proposal.
He consulted an oracle, and Blessing confessed that the child was alive and living with a woman in Enugu. The police arrested Blessing and Efunaya Nabufe, and SP Suleiman Nguroje confirmed they would be charged in court after a thorough investigation.
