Nigerian Man Petitions Guinness World Records To Recognize Nigeria For Most National Grid Collapses
A Nigerian man has sparked widespread attention online after filing a petition with Guinness World Records, requesting the organization to award Nigeria the record for the most national grid collapses in a single year.
The petition comes amid frequent power grid failures that have left Nigerians grappling with widespread electricity shortages.
The petitioner, who goes by the name "General Snow," took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to share an image of his official letter to Guinness World Records. In the letter, he humorously pointed out that Nigeria’s national grid had collapsed 11 times in 2024 alone, with the possibility of the number reaching 12 within days.
He suggested that the country’s recurring grid failures—occurring with alarming frequency—deserve global recognition.
“I am writing to formally request that Nigeria be recognized and awarded a world record for the most collapses of a national electricity grid,” General Snow wrote in the letter.
“As of this year, Nigeria’s national grid has experienced an unprecedented 11 collapses, and we expect to reach a dozen in the coming days. This 90% chance of collapse every two days sets a unique global precedent.”
General Snow’s letter also humorously referenced Nigeria’s formation of a committee dedicated to addressing grid failures, adding that the country stands out as the only one to do so.
He concluded the petition by stating that the honor of receiving the world record could be awarded to him until another Nigerian applies in the future, given the ongoing instability of the national grid.
The post quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions from Nigerians and others. While some expressed support for the petition, others criticized it for mocking the nation’s power issues.
One commenter, @onlyonejega, voiced their agreement, stating, “As a Nigerian who has lived here for more than 25 years, I’m in full support of Mr. @generalshow_. I’ve never experienced a full month of steady electricity supply.” Another user, @pointzero_088, disagreed, arguing that the petition was disrespectful, saying, “It is extremely disrespectful to Nigeria to do this. We need to stop this kind of stunt.”
The conversation continued to unfold, with some users, like @RamotuOlaniyi, blaming the president for the power crisis, while @JpChidiOkoye1 took aim at the current Minister of Power, calling him “useless” and lacking “any brain.”
As the debate rages on, General Snow’s petition highlights the dire state of Nigeria’s national grid, drawing attention to the persistent electricity shortages that continue to affect businesses and daily life across the country.
