Ridwan Oke, an X (formerly Twitter) user, has voiced his disapproval of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s decision to grant clemency to a man who was sentenced to 14 years in prison for stealing a fowl.
In a tweet, Oke clarified that the convicted individual was found guilty of armed robbery, not just theft, and emphasized the gravity of the crime.
He pointed out that the law mandates clear penalties for armed robbery, supporting the judge's sentence as appropriate.
Governor Adeleke had instructed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to investigate the case and initiate clemency proceedings for the young man.
However, Oke argued that the prosecution had successfully proven the case, warranting the death penalty.
He highlighted the inherent danger of armed robbery, stating that using a cutlass and a gun makes the offender capable of lethal violence, regardless of the stolen item.
Oke cautioned that pardoning such individuals could create a dangerous precedent, saying, "Anyone using a cutlass and a gun to commit robbery, whether to steal a fowl or a pencil, is capable of killing to achieve their goal."
