A Nigerian woman has taken her grandmother to court over an unpaid debt of N95,000 (approximately $250 USD) borrowed five months ago. The granddaughter claims her grandmother promised to repay the loan in June, but now refuses to pay, stating that she doesn't intend to repay the debt since she takes care of her and provides for her needs. The grandmother argues that she has supported her granddaughter's education and living expenses, including housing and clothing, and therefore shouldn't need to repay the loan. The case highlights a complex family dynamics and a dispute over financial obligations.
In her grandmother's defence she said: "the girl stays in her house for free, eats her food and she also buys clothes for her.
She is in my house eating, I am paying house rent. I told her I want to use the money in my shop. I collected N95,000 from her and said I will pay in June. I said I will pay her back but I don’t have the intention to pay her back. She is my child. Why will I pay her? If I say I will not pay her she will not give me. I will pay her if she cool down. I will pay you but not now. Since I took care of you from Primary to secondary school.”
