The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an indefinite strike to commence on December 1, 2024, for states that have not implemented the 2024 National Minimum Wage. This directive followed a recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting where the NLC expressed frustration with certain state governments for delaying or refusing to comply with the wage law.
The NLC highlighted the economic hardships that Nigerian workers face due to inflation and rising costs of essentials, asserting that the lack of compliance with the minimum wage law is both legally and morally unjust. To address this, the NLC has established a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee tasked with mobilizing workers and educating the public on the necessity of wage justice.
Additionally, the NLC is pressing the Federal Government for more robust social protection policies, affordable healthcare, and a wage structure that aligns with the true cost of living in Nigeria. The union warns of further actions if these demands are not met, emphasizing the need for substantive relief for Nigerian workers.
