The FCT chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that workers in the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory will commence an indefinite strike on December 1, 2024. This action responds to the failure of the Area Council Chairmen to implement the N70,000 new national minimum wage, despite a directive from the NLC's National Executive Council issued on November 14, 2024.
The FCT Council Chairman, Stephen Knabayi, described the refusal to implement the minimum wage as a violation of the law and a disregard for workers' welfare. He also highlighted delays in paying workers’ entitlements, including outstanding arrears owed to primary school teachers in the area councils.
The decision aligns with the NLC's national directive for workers in 14 states and the FCT to strike over similar issues. The strike underscores growing discontent among Nigerian workers over the non-implementation of the revised wage structure, despite persistent economic challenges and inflation.
This development could disrupt operations in key public sectors within the FCT unless resolved swiftly.
