Medical experts are urging men experiencing breast enlargement, known as gynaecomastia, to seek immediate medical evaluation, highlighting the abnormality of the condition and its potential link to serious health concerns.
Consultant endocrinologists emphasized that while breast tissue development in men could sometimes be benign, it may also result from hormonal imbalances, liver or kidney diseases, medications, or even tumors.
Professor Oladapo Ashiru, a reproductive endocrinologist, noted that while gynaecomastia can stem from excess body fat or hormonal imbalances, it warrants attention as it may indicate more serious underlying conditions, such as infertility in the future.
Similarly, Dr. Oluwakemi Ashubu, a pediatric endocrinologist, stressed that male breast development should not be ignored, advising that early diagnosis is key to addressing potential health risks.
Experts from Johns Hopkins Medicine and the National Library of Medicine have identified three key life stages where gynaecomastia may occur: shortly after birth, during puberty, and in older age.
While often linked to hormonal changes, physicians warn that persistent breast enlargement in men, especially outside these phases, requires medical intervention to rule out more serious issues.
Early consultation with healthcare professionals is strongly recommended to explore treatment options and prevent possible complications.
