The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has expressed confidence that the Lukarawa terror group will soon be neutralized, emphasizing joint operations with neighboring countries as a key strategy. During a press briefing following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Oluyede highlighted significant advancements in tackling the group, which operates primarily in Sokoto and Kebbi States and has ties to extremist networks in Mali and Niger.
Oluyede stressed the importance of cross-border collaboration, noting that the inclusion of Niger Republic's military in the operations marks a turning point in addressing the group's movement across borders. "We are hitting them hard here, and with Niger Republic coming on board, their days are numbered," he said.
The Lukarawa group, initially formed as a local militia against banditry, has evolved into a radical terrorist organization imposing strict laws, disrupting governance, and offering financial incentives to recruit youths. Their activities, including the November 2024 attack in Kebbi State’s Mera village, have exacerbated insecurity in Nigeria's northwest.
The Army Chief also shared his commitment to adopting new strategies to achieve security goals nationwide, emphasizing intensified efforts in the northwest and northeast. His recent visits to operational zones aimed to boost troop morale and focus on delivering tangible results.
