Prince Johnson, a former Liberian warlord and a controversial figure in the country's history, has passed away at the age of 72. His death was confirmed on November 28, 2024, by his political party and Senate officials. Johnson was a central figure during Liberia's brutal civil wars (1989–2003), which claimed approximately 250,000 lives.
He gained global notoriety in 1990 after a video surfaced showing him drinking beer while his forces tortured and killed then-president Samuel Doe. This event became one of the defining moments of Liberia's civil conflict. Despite his past, Johnson transitioned into politics, serving as a long-time senator and leading the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction party.
Originally from Nimba County, he later became an evangelical preacher, earning significant local support. However, his refusal to support a war crimes tribunal for the atrocities committed during the civil wars remained a point of contention, leaving his legacy deeply polarizing.
His death marks the end of an era for one of Liberia’s most controversial and enduring figures.
