Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a new minimum wage of ₦85,000 for civil servants in the state, surpassing the ₦70,000 approved earlier this year by the Federal Government.
Sanwo-Olu made the announcement during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday.
The governor highlighted that the wage increase is a reflection of Lagos's high cost of living, stating, "Lagos has a premium in terms of the cost of living... It is not a competition, but a function of affordability and capacity."
He also hinted at plans to further raise the minimum wage to ₦100,000 by January, prioritizing the well-being of the state's workers.
Meanwhile, the Lagos government is facing legal action from advocacy groups demanding transparency regarding a $100 million land deal involving the Dangote Refinery.
These groups have filed a lawsuit against Governor Sanwo-Olu, seeking clarity on the financial details of the land transaction.
The wage increase comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over government spending, adding pressure to the administration as it navigates both labor negotiations and ongoing legal challenges.
