Lieutenant-General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the late Chief of Army Staff, was widely recognized for his dedication, courage, and leadership in the Nigerian military. Born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, Lagbaja had a distinguished military career, joining the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987 and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in 1992.
Throughout his service, he played significant roles in various internal security operations, such as Operations ZAKI, Lafiya Dole, Udoka, and Forest Sanity, aimed at addressing security challenges across Nigeria. An alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, he obtained a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, underscoring his commitment to professional growth.
His recent appointment as Chief of Army Staff in June 2023 by President Bola Tinubu was a testament to his bravery and expertise. In his 16-month tenure, he focused on strengthening Nigeria's security, showing outstanding dedication until his untimely passing.
The loss has brought condolences from government officials and dignitaries, including Defence Minister Muhammad Badaru, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who visited his family in Niger Barracks. As a mark of respect, President Tinubu has directed the national flag to be flown at half-mast for seven days. Lieutenant-General Lagbaja’s legacy lives on through his wife, Mariya, and their two children. His commitment and contributions will be remembered as Nigeria mourns the loss of a devoted and selfless leader.
