In a dramatic turn of events, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has invalidated the election of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, as the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
This ruling, delivered just days after Oluomo's son, King West, boasted of his father’s nationwide influence, reinstates Tajudeen Baruwa as the legitimate leader of the union.
The controversy began shortly after MC Oluomo's election victory. King West, in a celebratory post on social media, shared pictures of his father alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, captioning them:
“We don’t just control Lagos, but we control Nigeria.” However, the court’s judgment has cast a shadow over this declaration, raising questions about the legitimacy of Oluomo's leadership.
The court's decision affirms Baruwa’s re-election and nullifies Oluomo's claim to the presidency.
Legal experts and union members have noted that actions or decisions taken under Oluomo's brief tenure could now face scrutiny or reversal.
This development is expected to trigger ripples within the NURTW and potentially alter the political dynamics surrounding transport unions in Nigeria.
For now, Tajudeen Baruwa retains his position, and the leadership dispute appears far from over.
