The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has spoken out against the public criticism regarding the recent arraignment of minors in an Abuja court on November 1. This follows significant backlash from Nigerians and some leaders who questioned the handling of the minors—who appeared malnourished—after their arrests during the #EndBadGovernance protests held in early August.
In response to reports that six suspects fainted in court, the IGP suggested this was a deliberate act designed to sway public opinion negatively. The IGP’s statement, issued by Police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that prompt medical attention was provided, underscoring the force’s commitment to detainees' welfare. Adejobi also noted that under Nigerian law, anyone of criminal responsibility age is held accountable, regardless of perceived age.
The IGP encouraged citizens to remain impartial, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to upholding justice in line with global standards.
