A Nigerian man has shared his tough experience after selling his two houses to relocate overseas in search of better opportunities. His heartfelt message, posted on social media, sheds light on the challenges faced by many who embark on a similar journey.
According to him, he sold both his personal home and a tenant property, which he had effortlessly built and completed in six months, to fund his relocation to Amsterdam. However, life abroad turned out to be far more difficult than he had imagined.
“I work in the cold, wind, and rain, doing two shifts every day, Monday to Sunday, while also attending university classes,” he revealed. His jobs included washing dishes and cleaning toilets, which took a toll on his health, leaving him with waist pain and no time for rest or leisure.
For over two years, he worked relentlessly, sacrificing social activities and personal time to keep up with his demanding schedule. The struggle wasn’t just physical—he also dealt with the stress of immigration rules and limited job prospects.
Reflecting on his decision, he advised others to carefully plan before selling their assets to move abroad. “Before you sell your houses to travel, sit down and strategize well. It’s not easy to rebuild what you’ve sold,” he cautioned, emphasizing that the glamorous lifestyles often portrayed on social media can be misleading.
He pointed out that office jobs are rare for immigrants unless they have specialized tech skills or secure a job through sponsorship. “No office jobs are waiting for you here,” he warned, adding that the pressures of academics and immigration laws could be overwhelming.
Despite the challenges, he clarified that his goal was not to discourage others but to present a realistic view of life abroad. “I’m not here to discourage you but to show you the reality of living abroad and prepare you for it,” he concluded.
His story serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of thorough planning and realistic expectations for anyone considering relocating for a better life.
