Renowned Nollywood actor, Nonso Diobi, recently shared an unusual story about his experiences with fan reactions after portraying cultist roles on screen.
During live on his TikTok, Diobi revealed a shocking incident that took place in Benin, Edo State, where he was confronted and beaten by locals who claimed he failed to convincingly play the part of a “senior man” – a common title for high-ranking cult members in his roles.
Diobi, well-known for his diverse roles in Nollywood, reflected on the toll such portrayals can take.
"Everyone of us enjoys the fame and fun that comes along with being a part of Nollywood," he said, acknowledging the perks of celebrity life. However, he admitted that some roles have unexpected consequences. He recounted the Benin incident, saying, “Imagine my humble self being beaten black and blue… they said I didn’t play a ‘Senior Man’ role well, so I was impersonating for cultist wey I no be o.”
The actor humorously shared how this experience has since influenced his career choices.
“Hahahaha, after that incident, you bring a senior man role… I no do,” Diobi joked, underscoring his decision to avoid roles depicting cult members.
Diobi’s story sheds light on the pressure Nollywood actors face to embody characters authentically – sometimes, with very real consequences from fans who blur the line between fiction and reality.
