Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Dominic has opened up about a lesser-known chapter of her career, describing how she faced an unspoken ban from Nollywood.
Dominic, who married media entrepreneur Fidelis Anosike in 2022, shared her experience recently, where she revealed the challenges she encountered after a shift in her professional approach.
"I don’t think I’ve ever shared this story, but let me do it this time," Dominic began.
She explained that during her early days in Nollywood, producers and marketers had direct access to actors, a system that often allowed room for exploitation.
However, this changed when she began working with her manager, Mildred.
"They weren’t comfortable with speaking to a manager because they knew we couldn’t be cheated anymore," she said.
Dominic disclosed that this shift in representation led to a "silent ban" in the industry, leaving her without work for a long period.
While the ban impacted her career initially, Dominic noted that it ultimately led her to another path.
With the encouragement of her manager, she took up production and released her first film, The Meeting, which went on to become a success.
Reflecting on the experience, Dominic saw a silver lining: “So in a way, the ban was also a blessing.”
