General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria's former Head of State, recently reflected on his efforts to save former President Olusegun Obasanjo from execution during the regime of General Sani Abacha. Gowon revealed this during the inaugural Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival in Plateau State.
In 1995, Obasanjo was implicated in an alleged coup against Abacha's government and sentenced to death, despite maintaining his innocence. Gowon disclosed that he wrote to Abacha, urging him to reconsider the execution, emphasizing that leadership should be used for good. He even sent his wife to deliver the letter late at night. Gowon expressed gratitude that Obasanjo's life was spared, leading to his eventual release in 1998 and his election as Nigeria's president in 1999.
The event highlighted themes of unity and reconciliation, as both leaders praised the Plateau State government for promoting peace and harmony through initiatives like the carol. Governor Caleb Mutfwang was commended for fostering peaceful coexistence amidst the state's security challenges.
