The House of Representatives has renewed efforts to pass the Independent Candidacy Bill ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections. This bill aims to expand political participation by allowing Nigerians to run for office without needing to align with political parties. Sponsored by Hon. Akin Rotimi (APC-Ekiti), the bill is part of a broader push to improve the electoral process, particularly after seven cycles of elections in the Fourth Republic.
The bill, which had faced opposition in previous assemblies, has been recommitted to the Committee on Constitutional Review for further evaluation. To foster public engagement, the House has launched a dedicated website providing detailed information about the bill. While there are misconceptions, the House is focusing on clarifying these technical aspects and continuing advocacy efforts to gain support.
