In celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, President Bola Tinubu bestowed prestigious National Honours on several distinguished Nigerians for their outstanding contributions to the country. Among the honorees are Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Benjamin Kalu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
These National Honours, established by the National Honours Act No. 5 of 1964, are the highest awards Nigeria can confer on its citizens and friends of the nation. The awards recognize individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the country, contributing to national development and the welfare of its people.
In his national broadcast, President Tinubu proudly announced that Honourable Kalu had been conferred with the title of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON). Senate President Akpabio and Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun were also honoured with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). Additionally, the Deputy Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives received the title of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), further highlighting the significance of their roles in shaping Nigeria's democracy.
Honourable Benjamin Kalu, who represents the Bende federal constituency of Abia State, has demonstrated commendable leadership since being elected Deputy Speaker just over a year ago. His legislative focus has been consistently people oriented, prioritizing bills and motions that address the needs of his constituency and the broader nation.
One of Kalu’s landmark achievements is the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill, which has now been signed into law by President Tinubu. This legislation is set to enhance the development and integration of the South East region, a critical step toward addressing regional disparities and fostering national unity.
As the government prepares to release the full list of National Honours recipients for 2024, it is clear that these awards symbolize more than just recognition they are a testament to the commitment and service of individuals who dedicate themselves to the progress and prosperity of Nigeria.
The conferment of these prestigious awards on Kalu, Akpabio, and Justice Kekere-Ekun reflects the government’s appreciation for their efforts and underscores the importance of leadership in ensuring the country’s development.
As Nigerians celebrate their independence, the recognition of these leaders serves as a reminder of the impact that selfless service and dedicated leadership can have on the nation’s growth and progress.
