In a landmark move, Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted amnesty to 117 convicts serving various prison sentences across the state. This compassionate gesture, as announced by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan, on Tuesday, is part of a broader effort to transform the lives of those affected by the justice system. The amnesty follows recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which aims to provide a second chance for convicts by offering rehabilitation and reintegration opportunities. This initiative is a reflection of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to justice reform and his belief in the potential for change within individuals.Among the 117 convicts, 19 will be granted outright release, while several others will have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Some inmates will also benefit from reduced sentences, offering them hope for a fresh start as they reintegrate into society. The formal announcement was made by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy. He emphasized that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision is in line with Section 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. The council’s recommendations were based on insights from correctional officers, legal professionals, and respected community members. Key considerations included the nature of the offences, duration of imprisonment, age, health, and conduct of the inmates.
