Governor Fubara's Directives: A New Era for Education in Rivers State
Governor Fubara, during the inauguration of the Chairmen and four members each for the Senior Secondary Schools and Universal Basic Education Boards at the government house in Port Harcourt on Friday, issued significant directives aimed at improving education in Rivers State.
Suspension of Promotion Exercise in Public Schools
Governor Fubara explained that the promotion exercise in the senior cadre in public schools had been suspended. The reason for this suspension was the section being previously headed by an Acting Director, whom the governor felt should not be given such a delicate task. This responsibility will now be managed by the substantive board led by Dr. Sam Umejuru, an educationist.
Focus on Education, Healthcare, and Agriculture
Governor Fubara emphasized his commitment to enhancing the education sector in Rivers State. He stated that education, healthcare, and agriculture would be his top priorities in the 2025 budget.
Universal Basic Education and the Role of David Briggs
In the Universal Basic Education sector, Governor Fubara tasked the newly appointed Chairman, David Briggs, with improving the standards set by the previous board. Briggs, a politician and administrator, previously served as the Chairman of the Senior Secondary Schools’ Board. The governor encouraged him to lay a strong educational foundation for the children in the state, highlighting that academic excellence begins at the UBE levels.
Confidence in the Appointees
Governor Fubara expressed confidence in the ability of the newly inaugurated chairmen and board members to perform their duties efficiently. He noted their extensive experience in public and civil service, particularly in the education sector. Many of the appointees were seasoned educationists and administrators who had held positions as principals and vice principals during the governor's early career as a civil servant.
Inauguration of the Boards
Dr. Sam Emejuru, the Chairman of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board, expressed gratitude to Governor Fubara for the appointment. He assured the governor of their commitment to carrying out their duties diligently and fairly.
“What I want to assure you is that we are not going to disappoint you. We are going to carry out our duties efficiently, diligently and with fairness to everyone. We take cognizance of the fact that we know you are very passionate about education. So, we are not going to joke with this responsibility assigned to us. We are assuring you that we shall not be found wanting. We are going to deliver as you have trusted us to give us this assignment,” Dr. Emejuru stated.
Mr. David Briggs, Chairman of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board, also expressed gratitude and commitment to the governor’s vision for education.
“Our commitment will be unalloyed. We are assuring you that we will not disappoint you, knowing how meticulous, detailed, passionate, and of course, result-oriented you are. We will not disappoint you. We will not disappoint your government, and in totality, we will not disappoint the people of Rivers State. We will be at your side, as your foot soldiers to realise the educational heights you have as a vision for Rivers State,” Briggs said.
