FG has refuted the rumors of permitting foreign military bases within Nigeria.
The Nigerian Government has denied reports suggesting collaboration between the Tinubu administration and other nations to establish a foreign military base in Nigeria.
This news outlet learned that the Minister of Information, Muhammed Idris, revealed this information in a statement on Monday, May 6, branding such reports as falsehoods and advising the public to disregard them.
According to the Minister's statement, the federal government appreciates the collaboration of international partners in addressing security issues but has not entertained any proposal for the establishment of a foreign military base within the nation.
The statement reads, “The Federal Government is aware of false alarms being raised in some quarters alleging discussions between the Federal Government of Nigeria and some foreign countries on the siting of foreign military bases in the country. We urge the general public to totally disregard this falsehood.”
“The Federal Government is not in any such discussion with any foreign country. We have neither received nor are we considering any proposals from any country on the establishment of any foreign military bases in Nigeria.”
“The Nigerian government already enjoys foreign cooperation in tackling ongoing security challenges, and the President remains committed to deepening these partnerships, with the goal of achieving the national security objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
It's worth noting that in recent days, numerous reports, particularly on social media, have circulated about the federal government engaging with foreign powers to establish a military base in Nigeria.
These reports surfaced following the withdrawal of troops from the United States and France from Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.
A previous report indicated that the military regimes in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have pursued an anti-Western foreign policy in the last 18 months, favoring ties with Russia over those with the United States and its Western allies.
